As a pregnant woman, you may sometimes feel the need for additional reassurance that the pregnancy is progressing as expected. At Blicka Ultrasound Clinic in Täby, we offer extra checks that you, as a patient, pay for yourself. You do not need to be registered in Stockholm to book a private ultrasound with us.
What is an anatomical scan?
An anatomical scan, sometimes referred to as morphological ultrasound, is a detailed and systematic examination to review the fetus's anatomy and development. The purpose is to assess whether the child is developing normally and to detect any abnormalities early.
What can one learn during an anatomy scan?
The pregnancy is dated and you receive an estimated due date (EDD) if you have not already done a Nuchal Translucency Test (NT) or First Trimester Ultrasound (FTU) beforehand. The number of fetuses, heart activity, fetal movements, amniotic fluid volume, and the placement of the placenta and umbilical cord are checked. Growth is assessed by measuring the head, abdomen, and femur; alternatively, in younger fetuses, the head and crown-rump length (CRL) are measured.
The body structure and organs are examined very carefully (according to SFOG's checklist for fetal anatomy examination).
Which organs are examined during an anatomy scan?
During an anatomical scan, the following are checked:
• The heart, skull, and structures of the brain.
• Face, lips, and profile
• Back, chest, lungs, neck
• Arms, legs, hands, feet, and if possible, fingers and toes
• The abdomen with stomach, liver, umbilical cord attachment, kidneys, bladder
• Number of vessels in the umbilical cord
After week 15, if desired, one can often also find out if it is a girl or boy that is expected.
When can an anatomy scan be done?
The examination is usually conducted between pregnancy weeks 12–22. It is possible to review in more detail after week 18.
